Bertrand Bonello was born in 1968, in Nice. He alternates between music and cinema.
Qui je suis (1996), according to Pier Paolo Pasolini, is a creative documentary.
Quelque chose d’organique (1998) was presented at the Berlin Film Festival in the Panorama section.
Le Pornographe (2001) with Jean-Pierre Léaud was presented at the International Critics’ Week in Cannes and won the FIPRESCI prize.Tiresia (2003) was presented in Official Competition at Cannes in 2003.
In 2008, he directed De la guerre, presented at the Directors’ Fortnight.
In 2011, L’Apollonide, Souvenirs de la maison close, presented in the Official Competition at Cannes, won eight César nominations.
Saint Laurent (2014) also in Official Competition at Cannes, represents France at the Oscars and obtains 10 César nominations. The same year, he exhibited at Beaubourg for a retrospective and released a record, Accidents.

He regularly continues to make short or musical films: Cindy, the Doll is Mine (2005), with Asia Argento, Official Selection at Cannes; My new picture (2007), Where the boys are (2010), Ingrid Caven, Musique et Voix (2012), presented at Locarno; Sarah Winchester, Opéra Fantôme (2016), for the 3rd stage of the Paris Opera.

In 2016, Nocturama, his seventh feature film, was released.

He presents at the Directors’ Fortnight in 2019 Zombi Child, shot between France and Haiti.
